Currently looking for a mini on eBay and I'm checking reg numbers on ones I'm watching,to make sure any cars I bid on aren't stolen etc....what does it mean when the reg checking site can't recognise a reg?

I found when looking that if the site asks for the make that it needs to be right, is it Austin or Morris or Austin Morris or Austin-Morris or Leyland or BL or Rover ? if the brand isn't right the site does not find the reg.

The reg is the easy bit.

If I search for mine on its original registration, some sites find it, others don't. Same searching with the 90 BHP plate. Could it be a private plate.... ?

Sometimes the car won't show up on the gov.uk site even with the correct manufacturer and VRM. This may be because it has been off the road since before the system was computerised.

My Mini for instance doesn't show up because it has been off the road since 2002

I had this when looking up Scamps. Because the DVLA didn't have any set way of giving them a title they can be a Scamp, Mini Scamp, BMC Scamp and so on. I found the AA reg checker site a good one to use as you just fill in the reg but I expect lot of others work.

If you enter the reg then continue you can check the details without paying.

It also doesn't help that over the years DVLA sometimes put in the wrong details when there is a change of owner.

For the ones I have checked cars that have been off the road come up but as they haven't had an MOT since the computerised system was put in place they will show no details held.
