before you put the timing case back on I assume you've set the cam timing correctly... which means you must already know where TDC is relative to the crank and cam...
With piston 1 at tdc the woodruff key on the crank should be pointing straight up ( 12 o'clock position )
The pulley which is used to time the ignition will have a dint in it which should line up with the timing marks on the timing chain cover.

I think you're going to have to supply a picture as I'm not sure if you're on about cam timing or ignition timing...

What I was thinking from the first post. As the timing cover does not come into anything till ignition timing.

The pulley which is used to time the ignition SHOULD have a dint in it, but I'll be ****** if I can find one on mine.

That's usually beacuse the crAnk damper has failed and the outer rim has moved in relation to the centre. Fit a new pulley.

And if that's the case, bin the Harmonic Damper!
Fit a new one.
Busted crank otherwise.
