Hi,

I've noticed recently that when I come back from a drive, I hear a water boiling/sizzling noise coming from the engine. I think it's coming from the radiator. I've also noticed that when you put your hand on the passenger's side wing, it's very hot, whereas the driver's side is cold.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Corey.

If your rad is side mounted (as standard) the fan blows the heat through vents in your inner wing which will heat the outer wing so this is normal.

Have you checked your temperature gauge, is it reading normal during driving?

Have you checked the level of your coolant?

As above is the coolant topped up? (make sure it's not to hot to take off and sprays hot coolant every where)

My temperature gauge isn't accurate I don't think. It takes a while to start up, and when it does it shows the exact same temperature all the time.

If I needed to buy new coolant, will any regular stuff do? Most people try to recommend specialised stuff (Silly question, but always worth asking).

You'll need the blue stuff, I got mine from halfords, if you don't know what sorts in it at the minute then drain it out, flush it through and fill it with new.

Wheres the gauge sitting at? middle?

Yeah as Alex said you just need a decent Antifreeze & Summer coolant, which you dilute with water for the desired freeze range protection (normally a dilution table on the bottle).

My gauge takes a while to come to life too, and normally rises to half way and stays there, which is normal unless your racing the engine a bit in warm weather which pushes the needle a little over half way.

Well, I checked the expansion tank and it looks empty from the outside, but when I took the cap off, it seemed full to the brim. Although, it was slightly orange...

Well if the expansion tank is full to the brim, theres nowhere for the water to go when it expands is there. If the tank is under pressure this is why its sizzling. Remove some coolant from the expansion tank so its about half full.

Will it be worth changing the coolant while I'm at it?

I bought it nearly 3 months ago. All the fluids seemed perfect at the time...

Nobody's said this yet so I will. Your temp gauge does work.

Haha, I assumed it did. I just never thought it would be accurate as it's either on fully cold or nearly halfway  :gimme:

If you can hear it sizzling, then I'd say it's running hotter than it should, or the cap may not be sealing as well as it should.
