The first type is the "Magic wand" gear selector, the second is a "remote" gear selector.

I don't have first hand experience of swapping these over, but briefly the rear housing of the gearbox/diff housing is different along with the selector mechanism.

I'm sure someone with more experience will have a detailed idea about what to change.

Phil.

You need to change the gearbox from a 'magic wand' type to the later remote shift type. The gearbox casing is different.

Then cut a hole in the tunnel, plate over the original hole and fit a gaiter onto the lever to keep the wet out.

As Phil said, the housings are different between the 2 and would require engine out surgery.
Another possible idea, which may be around, is a remote shifter kit. Way back when they first came out there was a kit available to make gear lever further back, sort of linkage set up.

Is it a 'personal preference' thing or is it because the shifters too far away/floppy?
If its the later, make sure the links, bushes and pivots aren't too worn and then straighten the gear lever at the bend near knob. There's extension bits available but theyre not much help as the lever ends up looking like a pretzal.

I also want to change the engine to a 1000 or 1300cc engine.

Jorge,

Looks like it's an early 850 in pretty good original condition from your top picture?

Called an "SPQR"

Long and short if you want the gear stick just in front of the handbrake then you'll need a remote gearbox.... also if you're considering changing to a 1300, then you will also need either a cooper S 3 synchro remote gearbox (333 or 190) or a 4 synchro remote otherwise the engine will not fit on the gearbox and the crank will not rotate without taking chunks out of the case.

You need this alloy extension, a new diff housing like this one, the gearstick and a bracket under the body. You'll also need to cut a hole for the gearstick to come through and plug up the old hole as mentioned above.

If you are buying second hand parts it's quite possible that they are worn and have a sloppy feel to them..

As the diff cover and the gearbox casing are matched, in fact you need a complete Cooper gearbox to do the job properly. The Cooper/Cooper 'S' had different gear ratios from the 850 as well.

I have fitted a Magic Wand Diff cap to a remote style Gearbox Case, mind you, I did have to machine up the flange faces to get them on the same plain. I also removed the dowels from the case to cap face.

Having done it this way, I don't see that it would be an issue going the other way, however, either be prepared to try a LOT of different caps (not easy to come by these days!) or have the parts machined to improve fit. Without doing this, at the very least, expect oil leaks - more so than 'normal'.

But if the OP is building a Mk.1 Cooper he needs the Cooper gear set as well, so might as well look for a complete Cooper gearbox.

Or just find your 1300 and box and make it fit. You are already contemplating things that others dream to have so just do what every you want.

Would it be better to sell your car and get a modded one ....
