I need to take the Speedo Drive out of the gear book on a Mk2.

However I am unable to remove it from the box. I have taken the clamp, gasket etc from the cable, and yet cannot remove the drive.

There is a slight degree of movement upwards, but not enough to remove it!

Any ideas, I want to try and not use heat, as the engine is nicely painted, and don't want to have to remove to many components.

Thanks!

Mmmmm the drive or the housing? As you say gasket I guess the housing is off? And then the bush? So the pinion should just come out with a twist.

Its still on the box. The drive is free, almost seems like the bush is stuck.
I imagine freeing it off will help, but not sure on the best to do it!

Sometimes the bushes do stick as it's a steel on ali' interface and if water has gotten in there they will stick....

First of all if you're struggling with access, then I recommend removing the radiator.

I sent you a PM, but was going to try this in the morning. I've made a tool to fit in on the internal bush to try and free it enough to pull the whole lot out!

There's a slot in the steel bush (I assume this is what's stuck?), you can usually give these a bit of a tap to spin it (even a little), sometimes that frees them up enough to get them out.

Got it sorted in the end!

Had to take the drive end of the gear box, not an easy task when in situ!

Heated the casing up as it was properly stuck in there.

Turned out to be the correct teeth ratio, bloody typical!
