Hi all I have a 96 spi. I had the engine & g/box rebuilt 9 months ago and I now have a problem with o/s driveshaft popping out about an inch. What holds it in place is there a clip on the shaft or the g/box

there should be a small clip fitted in a groove on the dif output shaft (gearbox side) the pot joint slides over this

http://www.minispare...ic/22G2688.aspx

I would also check the engine mounts , & engine steady's , if engine is moving about

the above clips can be a pain , if they are damaged at all / out of shape - making it awkward to fit the pot joint

hope this makes sense

Thanks for the reply- engine is tight so no issues there. Are the clips part of the gearbox? Reason I ask is as that was rebuilt and put back in by garage then they 'hopefully' will deal with this FOC!! What do you think

I don't really know

In My Opinion -

the clips are part of the gear box - they are attached to the shafts , not the pot joints

ask them - see what they say - how long was the warranty / guarantee ?

is it parts & labour  ?

Sorry for appearing thick, but what is actually popping out / off?  There are a few components around the area that you're mentioning that could be doing this and depend on what it actually is will help some of us offer some advice.

Any chance of posting up a photo?

As above. Pot joint out of gearbox output cover. Pot end of the driveshaft out of pot joint. Or outer end out of the outer CV.

Or is the inner of the Inboard CV popping out of the outer?

Maybe someone has left the circlip off the end of the output shaft or the pot joint was not fully slid onto the output shaft (circlip not fully engaged).

Have you tried manually sliding the pot joint towards the diff case to see if it will click on the circlip?

If there's no circlip there then the oil needs draining and the pot joint slid off the output shaft to see if the circlip is missing. If so then source the appropriate circlip and fit.

Should be part number 22G2688

Thanks for the photo, now we know were to look!

As whistler has said.

Also, I came across one that did this and it was the Oil Seal. I can't recall if it wasn't seated properly or if it was the wrong seal, put it sat just too proud and so wouldn't allow the Pot Joint to go fully home for the C clip to lock.

I have the same problem.
I'm certain that the circlip is fitted. Is it possible for it to fall off or be pushed into the diff?
Either way I need to investigate..

Would it be possible to remove the shaft, take the rubber seal out and put a new one on? Or would I need to take the whole side cover off?

Regards
Josh

All possible without taking the side cover off.
In fact if you jack only that side of the car up high enough you can even do it without draining the oil.

Haha I might give that a go!
How dodgy is it to drive it without the circlip doing its job?

Just crack the top ball joint, track rod end and remove the caliper so as not to strain the brake line. This should give you enough room. If not do the same to the bottom ball joint so you can check properly. As said above, you do not need to do anything with the diff housing, except change the oil seal while you there.

Check with the garage first. It's always worth a go if they value their reputation.
