I'm currently giving my 1985 mini a bit of attention.

We've fitted 7.5" Cooper S discs to allow 10" reverse rims. Generally I'm much more of a fan of the styling of early minis so I'd like to get rid of the plastic arches and just fit deluxe chrome arch & sill trim.

We've fit the wheels up with Yokohama A032R 65/70 tyres. Now, I'm aware British MOT rules state that tyre tread must be covered by the arch, but I've seen a few photos online of similarly configured Minis and wondered if anyone here had a similar set up and if they had any trouble down at the MOT station?

The alternative is to fit some narrow Somerford Group II arches painted body coloured, but I'd much prefer no arches if at all possible.

There are some photos of us trying on the wheels attached. What do you reckon?

Neg Camber bottom arms and some wide deluxe arch trim should help loads!

That might be a neat solution. Those Yoko's wear pretty quickly though, is 1.5 degree camber be enough to significantly wear the inside of the tyre?

Should be fine.

Even if you failed the MOT you have 10 days to get the parts and fit it. Most don't charge for it but some may charge a small fee.

It's not an MOT fail, unless it's corroded or damage leaving sharp edges, just sharp edges are not a failure point, like bumper lips. Odd rules but that's how it is!

Method of Inspection

Body Condition.

Examine the body work for excessive corrosion or damage resulting in sharp edges which are likely to cause injury

Reason for Rejection

A sharp edge or projection, caused by corrosion or damagewhich renders the vehicle dangerous to other road users, including pedestrians.

Here's the MOT testers manual we use,

Forgot, the wheels can stick out as far as you like for the MOT too, it's not tested :D

Yeah it's not so much sharp edges I'm worried about as we'll finish it with the chrome. It's just the wheels poking out. Are you sure it's not tested? My brother seems to think it is (he's doing his MOT certificate at the moment, but he's not passed yet, so he could be wrong!)

Missing trim could be interpreted as damage.

145 tyres would help too, as those Yokos are very chunky.

They were designed for drum brake cars though, so it'll always be a struggle with the extra inch of offset on disc brakes.

This is reverse rims with drum brakes and 145 tyres

Mine stick out like that, as I put 7.5 cooper discs on mine. It's not been a problem.Attached File  image.jpg   74.55K   10 downloads

Just reading this topic has raised a question for me... on the issue of 'missing trim'. I don't  have any sill seam trim fitted. The car is a minted Jap mini, and I have bilthamber clear waxed all the lip, and I think that it is better to leave the trim off to avoid collecting water and dirt which will cause corrosion. Also it means the seam gets cleaned when the car is washed, and gets to air dry (Whenever it isn't raining). Would an MOT consider that as 'missing trim' ?

Carluke I wouldn't worry about the trim causing corrosion. You've waxed it just pop it on, take it off once a year if you have to clean it. It'll take years to rot from the outside
