What in peoples personal or widely thought opinion are the modification stages of the a series. A 998 in particular. I've read too much contradicting in inconclusive information to decide whats what.

Starting with a bog standard a+ 998 and go from there.

Cheers nate

Where are you aiming? The target always sets the steps.

In my opinion

Stage 1 - Bigger inlet, air filer and full exhaust

Stage 2 - Stage 1 plus - Larger Head, performance cams and twin Carbs if applicable

Stage 3 - Stage 2 Plus Reground block, upgraded internals

Stage 4 - All of the above plus Forced injection. (Supercharger or Turbo)

And if You have a later Mini would be doing Remaps in between each stage

easy depends how deep your pockets are you can get a well tuned 998 to serious power but rember the rule of three

Price

Reliability

Power

you can only have 2 of the above, start with a nice stage one kit, if you want or can afford, maybe a different carb, but you should see a slight increase, and if you do anything spend some money on a rolling road session, its amazing how out of tune they can become the performance gain from that alone may be enough to stop you for a while :D

The aim to date is

Port polished head with 1098 valves
+80 pistons from calver
REOT13 cam from calver
1.3:1 roller rockers
Hif38 on a metro alloy inlet polished
Lcb exhaust

Any more mod ideas would be appreciated.

With the money you would spend trying to get more power out of the 998 I would buy a 1275 and do a conversion (Providing you can get insured on engine swapped car)

what head is that ? 998 one and the 1098 valves?

you would be better off with a 12G940 head and getting the thing pocketed ! more torque and power too, 1.3 roller rockers you wont see a massive difference on a 998 standard ratio I believe is 1.27 so not really worth it, personally I would be chucking money at the head and getting that right, plus if you spend it wright when/if you want bigbore you can go straight onto a 1275

Forget about stage this and that. I think its better to build up a spec that you want using advice from people who have had results or experience in what you want to achieve. It's better to understand the concepts of how to gain the power and how it will behave for your purpose.

I've been talking to Keith calver for his opinion and working with my local engineer Pete burgess who knows Keith quite well.

I quite like the small bore unit as a concept plus I've hit that period of life where I get a garage and time so I can save up for the mods.

Ditch that and fit a 1275.

Rust.
Always start with getting rid of the rust.

The biggest increase in Power per £ is a stage one and this depending on supplier can be 20% + and yes there is something about a 998 engine which makes it smoother to drive, a 998 engine at Cooper spec of 55bhp is a nice engine, once you start chasing more BHP it becomes less of a road car with a narrower power band needing lots of revs, no doubt there are screemers out there that produce a lot more but they would not be enjoyable on the road.

Stages are where the band plays.

Forget them in engine building.

Define what you want, then you can decide the steps to follow in your build.

I went for
998 +20
Twin 1 1/4 with vizard mods
12g202. Head
Freeflow maniflow

Just had it on the rolling road and got 59.2 bhp and 63.2 lbft.
Very happy with that.
