As above it will run (not perfect), then it gradually gets worse the longer it is running until it finally cuts out. Then you can turn the key over and it will not start, but you can hear it nearly going.

This may be simple, I've had minis before but this is my first project and I am trying to get my hands dirty. I suspect it may be the car running to Rich but if anyone has any suggestions that would be brill!! 😀

Sounds like a fuel problem. What age is your mini? Carb/injection? Try holding the throttle flat down and spinning it over. If it starts it would point to fuel. Failing that start at the beginning, check point gap/condition, timing, condensor coil etc

It's 1980 city carb. Would you say the problem is too much fuel or too little. It farts and bangs when running. If I leave it for a bit it will start no problem

Have you done any work to the engine recently? Or has it been running with no problems recently?

I am guessing timing.

It hadn't been started for 5 yrs, I've done the basics plugs points condenser but it could be timing

I would say to much, but if it hasn't been started for 5 years have the float chamber top off, you will probably find it full of sediment.

What colour are the plugs? That will give you an indication if under or over fuelling

That's only going to help if he can get it running and drive it a few miles IMO, running on choke and shunting it about won't leave much of a clear plug colour IMO? I'd strip and clean the carb first as it needs doing anyway after five years, you are chasing your own tail trying to tune it else.
