The OP said it had no oil. Does he mean 'absolutely no oil', in that the sump was empty, or just not showing on the dipstick? In 1000 miles a 998 could easily use 4 pints as 250 mpp is not excessive if the engine is worn somewhat. So was it driven over 1000 miles without the oil level being checked? With a Mini it should be checked very frequently, especially as the oil will surge on right hand corners and if low will cause loss of oil pressure and thus damaged main & big-end bearings.

The water loss will probably be a hose as it won't just 'run out' if it's a HG failure.

A bit more engineering logic needs applying here, methinks.

I meant it as not showing on the dipstick
I am usually very good in checking oil and fluids but have slipped having a lot going on recently and am now paying for it
It's not a 998 engine though it is a 1330 bill Richards engine
I filled up to just under the max level after doing a filter change and then didn't check it for at maximum 1000 miles. I'd say more like about 600 - 700

So you may well not have a issue burning oil, just within normal tolerences on usage, be interested in what the comptession check says.
