Hi Guys,

 

Electrics not my best subject!

Have seen various rev counters for sale - Smiths being the obvious but expensive choice when your on a budget.

Found a Tacho/Rev for sale - cheap & cheerful - but retro looking - but advertised for a motorcycle.

It says 12v - neg earth......are these clocks so different from car clocks - only cylinders being different in number really!

No such thing as an ignorant question.

But without specifics the answer can only be some will some will not.

If for a 4 cylinder engine then it could work as long as the input trigger system is the same as the engine you have (ignition system).
Classic Mini takes the input from the coil so get 4 triggers per revolution.

OK makes sense - so I really need more info from the supplier of the rev counter as to what the counter is calibrated for? i.e. 2,4 cylinders etc...

Sounds like it'll do something, as it mentions a "contacts signal". Expect it's for bikes as it has 0-13k scale. 

 

If it's for a 2 stroke twin it should work, a single pot should read double, but use use all of the scale.

Motorbike ignition systems often use the 'wasted spark' system where there is a spark on each engine revolution which is twice the number of sparks you will have on the mini, you will have to take this into account when selecting the number of cylinders on the selector switch - that's assuming there is one. So to get the correct reading you will have to select a 2 cylinder application.

Select single cylinder and you can tell every one your car revs to 12,000+ RPM
