Hi Guys,

Mini running OK using static timing of 5-8' but been reading threads about setting the timing correctly & I have one question:

My timing gun has the advance dial on it (no rev counter tho), the Crank pulley has the timing "comb" plate next to it marked 0,then 5...etc...

I want to set the timing correctly initially at 4000 revs - 32 degrees as stated in the threads, test drive, check for pinking then retard back at 2' increments until pinking stops.

When I set the dial to 32' on the gun - where exactly should the mark on the pulley line up to?

0' or 32' on the comb - bit confused as I have not set this before lol

Si

P.S Also just bought colour tune - does this need to be set before or after timing?

Should line up to the zero mark, but check the Gun before doing this, I've have a few that have been out by quite a bit.

With the car running at say 1000 rpms and the Dial back on zero, see where the notch lines up (eg 6 degrees), then set the gun to 6 degrees and it should line up at zero.

Yes, timing first then fuel mixture

It may be necessary some further adjustment to the timing after carb needle and dashpot oil have been tuned.

Carb is brand new HIF38 with AAU needle - using SU's own dashpot oil.

Not sure how to adjust/tune the needle tho! -

Visit the Burlen web site (link below).

http://sucarb.co.uk/...j37&___store=su

At the top of the page, click on the "Technical" tab.

On the next page, look at the column down the left.  Select "HIF Type Carburetors".

Under the expanded list that opens, select "Tuning - General".
