Ok it's my own fault really I should have loosened them before I removed the engine and subframe from the shell but I didn't and now I'm stuck because I can't remove them :( spent most of friday with a friend trying but everything we did didn't do a thing did they weld these :P on. Haynes no help either, fabricate a special tool??? Yeah I'll just go and do that, like it's the most run of the mill things to do. I doubt it would help anyway we managed to stop the hub/wheel moving and even with a breaker bar and proper socket it wouldn't budge I even tried standing on it.

The only thing I can think of is unbolt everything holding the hubs on and remove it with the driveshafts then take it over to my college and take an airgun to the nuts, think that'll do the trick? Alot hassle though especially with the price of petrol now but I need the subframe and driveshafts.

Don't suppose theres any tricks, maybe a better way of stopping the hub moving, we tried different things but nothing worked that well in the end we put a wheel on and he basically sat on the engine while I tried undoing the nut which did stop the wheel moving but then the whole subframe/engine was trying to move around it. we also tried using a metal bar and putting it between 2 of the wheel bolts but it wasn't as long as the breaker bar so didn't give enough power to stop the hub rotating. Should say that the engine/subframe has fallen forwards so the engine is almost horizontal to the ground aswell.

I second that. I had quite a few of my split pins break leaving a small bit wedged inside. Hammered them out wih a nail.

Nope both splits pins are out, they were in pretty good shape actually and came out quite easily.

if you have the hub/disk assembly off the subframe you could clamp the disk in a vice between some wood (for protection) and undo it that way. will need to be a good vice and attached to a solid bench.

we attached a vice (as we call it a multi tool) to the disc that wasnt bolted to anything it just stoped the whole lot spinning and it worked!!!! lol

You are clearly in a bind.

I assume you've tried this... but with the spindles still on the car did you ask a friend to "stand" on the brake pedal while you used a breaker-bar to loosen the hub nut? If you haven't done that, give it a try and if the wheel still slips, jam a brick in front of the road wheel as a chock and have more friends sit on the wing to hold the wheel down.

Workmate, bits of wood, G cramps.

Get the hub assembly off the frame by removing the caliper, splitting the ball joints and pulling the pot joint out of the gearbox (you have drained the oil first right? If not, do so). You will need to either split the pot joint into two parts by cutting the gaiter or remove it from the inner end of the shaft to get the assembly out of the frame. If you seperate the halves of both pot joints, mark which goes with which. Each joint's components are matched and must remain together. Remove the brake water shield.

Open Workmate jaws so that the hub assembly can pass through and support the disc on the jaws. Put some planks on the jaws first (modern Workmates have very flimsy tops), drop the brake disc down onto the planks, put more planks on top and use the G cramps to cramp both planks and the Workmate jaws together clamping the disc in place. Stand on workmate, that should be enough. If not, more cramps and more people standing on Workmate.

Of cousre if you really only need the driveshafts and subframe then you don't need to split this nut at all. The driveshaft is just clipped into the back of the CV, remove the gaiter, hold the shaft up and strike the bcak of the disc/hub assembly with a hammer. The whole lot will drop off the shaft (dont let it get damaged as it falls if you do need any bits and don't let it damage you, it's heavy. Just hold it an inch off the floor as you hit it, it doesn't need to be up in the air).

Can you not get at the hub nut with a steelie on ? That combined with someone pressing on the brakes should do it :(

Does no-one read threads before replying to them? The subframe is out of the car on the floor! You can get at the hub nut through the centre of any wheel, I always loosen and tighten them this way and it doesn't even need the brakes but if the subframe is out of the car, the brakes can't work easily and there's nothing holding it in place.

get down your mini garage and get him to get his big powerful air thingumy ratchet on it...thats what i do, this shocks them loose. then don't tighten them up till they are back on the car, so you can do the wheels on, mate pressing brake thingy.

or for the price of a new pair of hub nuts since you have the frame out the easiest method is to split the nuts with a chisel a couple of good smacks with a sharp chisel between on of the crowns to the hub and the nut is dealt with :geek:

Thanks for the replys guys, loving the pic alburglar think I'll remove the hubs and driveshafts as one then when I can get a air gun onto the nuts or put the disks in a vice and try that way but I'll have to wait till I'm back at college. I really only need the subframe at the moment so that will be fine.

Haven't removed the oil Dan, was planning to split the pot joints so the inner stays in the engine so hopfully I wouldn't need to.

Thanks again guys
