Hi has anyone ever tackled this?

I was thinking about this look on my 1984 mini and see you can get this conversion plate - I'm replacing the bottom of the rear panel due to rust and wondered whether this we a fairly simple mod?

I cant tell how the conversion plates fits - does it require a lot of cutting & blending (the sort of job you've leave for Neil AKA Sonikk4 :-) ) or can I tackle it?

Cheers

Chris

i think you have to carefully line up the conversion panels and cut out the old ones. Then weld the plates in. MK1 rear lamps are pricey though. have you considered a mk3 conversion?

my dad did this on my mini. The panels don't fit 100% as the curvature of the panel isn't quite the same as the bodywork, but with some tweaking and time messing about they do look pretty good. It depends on how confident you are as my dad has a lifetimes experience of restoring cars so isn't afraid of messing around with poor fitting panels, but someone less skilled might struggle.

the panels are pretty cheap so you could buy them and see how they line up on your mini before you start cutting.

yeah basically its the same as the mk4 (fitted to yours) but it doesnt havent the reverse lamp

Its a direct swap, but you'll need to sort out a fog light. I believe the reverse light isnt required by the mot, but you can get a reverse light (similar to the fog light)

I did this last year, and it makes a big improvement. I have a spotlamp on my boot for a reverse lamp

if I was restoring a car and wanted mk1 lamps I would fit the full rear panel, not exactly the cheapest option but much better, especially if having to do other repairs to panel anyway
at moment if you go on mk1 forum a user is offering a lower mk1 panel from a 1967 mk1 for cost of postage as he has cut up a shell.

I looked at the 'patch' panels and they looked a bit ordinary so opted for the whole panel of which I only fitted the lower section. Also unless you're lining the boot, you see the dodgey looking patch on the inside.
