Re-Routing Battery Cable Through The Car

Hi;

 

I asked or read this a long while ago but cannot find the thread.

 

As a result of another thread I bought some P Clips and 5mm Bolts and Nuts for fitting the Fuel, Brake and at the time the Battery Cable.

 

My floor repairs are now complete but am still in the process of repairing the Flitches so I don't want to paint yet. Before I do paint however I still need to weld in the 5mm bolts for the Fuel and Brake Lines.

 

The reason for this thread is that I am not 100% sure where I am going to route the Battery Cable (I do intend to route it through the inside of the car). I don't want to guess in case it affects the new carpet and ends up making a mess of the interior.

 

Because of this uncertainty I am not able to drill holes and weld the 5mm bolts for the P Clips that will secure the Battery Cable but don't want this to delay the build.

 

I am now considering stick on pads and cable ties to hold the cable in place on the inside this way I can finish the repairs, paint the inside and fit the cable whilst I am fitting the carpet and interior trim.

 

Couple of questions:

 

1. What is the best routing for running the cable inside?

2. Does anyone have a better idea on how to secure the cable?

 

From what I remember my plan and advice was to drill a hole in the bulk head inside the engine compartment and run the cable along the tunnel, through the Cross Member, along the cross member behind the front drivers seat. along the Inner Sill, along the base of the companion bin, under the rear bench, up through the rear bench and into the boot (possibly drill a hole in the back of the rear seat?

Sorry to hi-jack, but I've been thinking about doing something similar - the reason.?

 

To add an internal battery kill switch so that I can add a bit of extra security and when working on the car, a simpler way of disconnecting / reconnecting the battery.

 

I'd obviously just extend a loop into the car, and have the kill switch mounted under the rear seat - red handle sprayed black so as not to be too conspicuous, or create something out of an old tow bar plug/cap.

 

For under a tenner, it's a relatively simple immobilizer - or is it a flawed idea.?

Main reason is the remove the long metal water / rust trap that the battery cable sits in under the car.

Sounds logical, but if you can break into the car (which I guess in a Mini is pretty easy) you can switch it on??

And for that idea, it'd have too be conspicuous - like the idea of a digital keypad on the dash.!

I'd like to move my lines through the cab. The other winter it all felt a bit vulnerable when I could here the snow/ice mound in the middle of the road scrape along. A few minor scars on my sump as well. All it takes is a rock hidden in there.

As for how I intend to fit them, I'm going to use p-clips held in place by riv nuts running either side of the exhaust tunnel.

All of my cables and lines run inside the cabin through the cross member to the heel board alongside the tunnel and turn left or right dependant on the side of the tunnel it sits run along the heel board through the companion bin and onto the boot following the wheel arch

And how have you secured the cables / pipes?


I used p clips bolted down with m5 stainless fittings and then I put underlay either side of the pipes so when the carpet lays on top you can't see its there
