So, my 'custom steering wheel boss' is one made by my father many moons ago at college (not sure what for originally?) It is a wooden rimmed ally wheel including billet boss. It has a steel insert including the spline (fractionally too small for my mini). For both sentimental and aesthetically I would like to fit it to my mini.
My options\questions are either;

What is the spline specification on a mk3 1975 morris mini steering column? and has anyone ever had a wheel boss broached to fit a mini? If so how\where?

Otherwise, does anyone know of an original steering wheel or a boss that has a substancial amount of material around the spline that I could machine it down to 45mm diameter and insert this spline into my wheel?

Well I did just that in my youth, I cut the top of a spare column and pressed it into a alloy boss, no stress cracking and x-rays then looked ok by eye and did thousands of miles, still have it in the garage, yours being steel insert thats not a option, do you have any machine shops local you could ask.

So far I have tried a couple of local machining companies (still to find one who can help), and I am trying to find out about a off the shelf boss that might have enough material to replace the steel insert I have.

One more question; if I go down the route of replacing the steel insert with an ally insert will the two grub screws either side of the insert be sufficient? or should I add more/change the method of fixing?

If you get a boss and use the centre then it needs to be welded in, grub screws wont be up to the job
