I'm making a BBQ and need to make a cooking plate. Can I weld stainless steel using normal mig wire? I'm not too bothered about a little bit of corrosion around the edges as I'll probably make the frame from mild steel anyway.

Any advice would be much appreciated

if you want to weld cast with a normal filler then you need to get it glowing red hot first, even then it can be a bit hit and miss.

Thanks for all the advice everyone, I've hopefully found a mate who's a metal fabricator who's going to make me something to do the job. I'm just trying to get a price

Then when you're done you put the pig on the bar-b-que :-)

If I believed in God, I would want to shake his hand just for making pigs (yum).

I've just sent my mate a shocking picture of what I've got in mind.

Sorry about the edit in paint but it'll give you an idea

The shiny section on the left is a gas heated hot plate, the section on the right is a charcoal bbq
