The clutch slave cylinder was not working properly, although it was not leaking fluid out which meant that as it was OK before the car was stripped for restoration I re-used it and had the problem.

Clutch mechanisms can be a problem with the classic Mini and many different things can cause problems.

In your case measure the linear travel and if it comes up short, try a new slave cylinder first, bleed it all out and make sure the clutch stop and then the overthrow stop is set correctly. The re-measure the travel.

Other causes can be the master cylinder, the clevis pins, the clutch flexible hose or a bent arm.
