It was crushed because it was year 2000 Mini that had an earlier log book put on it to try and dodge the rules that stop you from importing a non approved car younger than 25 years old into the USA. As a year 2000 Mini it would have had an airbag fitted from the factory.

I'd be interested to see a 1988 Cooper or a 1990 Mini with a air bag.

The thing I don't understand is why they crush them, wouldn't it make more sense to seize it and auction them to wreckers. Even if they did like they do in some places, they cut them in half with a angle grinder. Stupid i think

What does it achieve by crushing it, $20 in scrap metal. Cut it in half and auction it, sold to wreckers ONLY, then give money to charity.

It's a warning shot, entirely for the purpose of putting people off from doing it themselves.

There is no deterrent quite like going to all that trouble to illegally get the car into the country only to have it crushed

We are talking about millions of dollars worth of vehicles each year passing through the system, 2 or 3 thousand dollars in scrap minus storage, auction and transport fees, it's a no brainer, good riddance :-)

Two earlier topics on it and I think you will find it did have an airbag where it should not have along with other miss matched details.

Sad thing is I know there's loads of these in America. I see pictures of them all the time. Really makes me angry that people are stupid enough to do this. This may work as a deterrent for others who are thinking of doing the same thing, but for me the worst thing is that I know there's an awful lot there already - surely it's only a matter of time before they too suffer the same fate.  :(

I can't see how it would be more of a deterant, who ever brought it in is without the car so why is crushing it more of a deterant. By auctioning it, the money can go to some good and so can car parts.

Over here the cops seize cars from hoons and crush them too, they're perfectly good , legal (ish) cars.

I reckon it's just a waste of resources, and possibly good classic cars down the tube. Yeah crush the worthless ones but auction the valuable ones and give money to charity. Imagine how much good the money from an illegaly imported Lambo or Ferrari would do.
