This has almost definitely been asked before I'm sure but I'm having difficulty navigating the website.
I have a 1985 1000 Mayfair. It hasn't been started in a long time so I bought a new battery. The ignition lights came straight on to my delight but when I turned the key to position 3, the starter only span and didn't crank the engine (it's the inertia style with the solenoid on the wing). I removed the starter and discovered the pinion was stiff so I've cleaned it all up and span it on the bench and the pinion moves right back up to the housing so all good.
I bolted the starter back into the housing and put the battery terminals back together but now when I turn the key, I don't get any dash lights and therefore no engine cranking. The 15A fuse has blown but was rusty so it might have been broken before. I changed all four fuses to be sure and still no power. I've bridged across the solenoid to try and crank manually but nothing. I took the battery out of the boot and brought it round the front, and directly connected it to the solenoid and engine earth using jump cables and still nothing. So took the motor out again and bench tested it and it span with no problems. This is sounding like an earth issue maybe.
Can anyone offer any advice and if they have seen this before?
Cheers
