I've noticed a fair bit of slightly-wince-inducing clonking when steering manoeuvres at low speed, although it's fine when at speed. I've also noticed a bit of up/down/side-to-side play on the steering wheel.

Rack shot? Or possible something less invasive?

Before you drive the car again its important you check the pinch bolt at the base of the column, if this is tight and you can see the base of the column moving up/down you need to strip the column out and see if its wear in the column splines or the spline on the rack.
