What type of registration plates would have been fitted to my 1971 van from original?

Pressed aluminium, white riveted letters on black background or silver riveted letters on black background.

Or was it different depending on the dealer?

Usually yellow and white  but dealer dependant.

I fitted black and silver on my 71 - just cause I can !!  :-)

When were the yellow and whites introduced? I thought all cars had black up until 73?

Unsure when introduced but i'm sure raised digit reflective would have been what was used.

I've gone right off black and silver since they became abundant on later cars as a way of trying to make it look older!

I haven't, mine deservedly and legally wears them with pride.

White / yellow plates were being phased in by then, I believe it was end of 72 start of 73 when they became compulsory for newly registered cars.

I like the look of the riveted on letters as apposed to the pressed aluminim type, I thought that these were maybe too early for a 71 though. Don't think I'll go for white/yellow as it would look a bit odd I think.

Coloured plates were available and legal from the late 1960's, but they did not become a legal requirement until 1st January 1973 after which date the black/white ones were no longer allowed.

So an early 'L' suffix is the latest suffix possible.

Also back in the late 60's nobody would have been seen dead with black and silver plates on a new car, everyone wanted the new smart reflective ones, funny how things change :D

(On a similar note when the Mk2 minis came out it was popular to cut mk1 lights out to fit the new and improved bigger lights!)

My first '65 Mk1 Morris Mini-Minor (Tweed Grey) shown here in 1974 before and.......just after I had 'upgraded' the badges, door mirrors, grille and rear lights to Mk3, fitted 'Tilling' winding windows, smoke tinted glass, rear wiper, roof aerial, some 6x10 Mambas with 165 Goodyear Rally Specials, centre exit exhaust and new reflective numberplates + wiper aerofoils !

We used to fit rectangular rear lights to Mk.1 rally cars to improve the rear lighting as the Mk.1 rear lights were so hard to see in bad weather or when slightly dirty.
