I've just been informed by Junior that during his drive home late last night, the headlights repeatedly went off, farting around with the light switch brought them back on again, then they would go off a while later- a bit disconcerting - causing him to drive with one hand on the light switch to flick it off & on again whilst on a Motorway- luckily late so was deserted.

He said that the light switch also felt hot to touch- though this may be a function of repeated use in a short period. He obviously couldn't tell if it was just the headlamps or the rears too. of course I've had a look just now on the drive and they are working fine.

before I dive in and kick out the light switch; what else is best to check?

I had both headlamps out the other week- seems coincidental- what could be amiss? any clues how to check it all out? I have a multi-meter (and I'm not afraid to use it either!)

The car is a 1990 1275 RSP.

Treat it to a new switch and a pair of halogen headlights :-)

Minimine now do a rounded front lamp rather than the flat ones some people dislike to keep the car looking right, I have just fitted some and they look good and light the road up nicely, very simple modification needed to the sidelight bulb holders with a few spade terminals crimped on.

In addition to replacing the head lamp rocker switch, check that the white plastic plug that pushes onto the back looks healthy. If that or the red/blue/brown wires on the back look at all damaged/burnt then you should replace with a headlamp loom repair from mini spares. Worth doing!
