Hi there!

Buzy days these days.

I got a new battery, and still the car didn't want to start ( starter was struggeling to turn over the engine.)

Now I have set the timing staticly to 6°bdtc ( I don't have a timing light atm, I dropped it on the alternator and didn't survive).

My oil pressure was fine last time I drove the mini ( more static advance) and it ran well, didn't get too hot etc. I used a 4 blade fan at that time

Now it has the right advance ( static, might be not so accurate) and it does start easily, but it gets quite hot ( still waiting on my temp gauge adapter, but you can feel it's hotter than normal), using 8 blade fan ( plastic thing) . But oil pressure drops to 18 psi on hot idle! ( was like 30 before)

Did do a needle change too ( from AAU to nr 3 needles)

Engine is just rebuilt etc.

Anyone has any clues or hints? Kinda stumped on this one...

cheers

the oil reading should be below the mid point on idle, it should increase when on the move. have you actually drove it without the working temp gauge? i doubt you can really make a judgement on the temp by feeling with your hand.

Drove it 5 miles, got a oil pressure gauge in PSI , was always quite accurate in the 998 I had :P

It justs feels too warm :P When I put the sender in the cooling water in teh rad it reads around 90°C instead of 82 of the thermostat

are you reading the temp by the bottom hose?

Put it where the radcap is normally ( I know it's bodging but I defo wanted to try measuring the temp).

Gettign hot isn't my biggest concern atm, the low oil pressure is :P

The oil pressure is a mechanical gauge that worked fine so ..:P

The first thing you need to do is set the timing with a light, 6degs static is not hard to get it retarded and it will run hot, do the timing with a light before making any other changes.

Is the oil pressure suppose to change when the weather is hot?

Mine was always running at 75 but now it's dropped to over 50!

WOuld overehating cause the oil to go so thin that the pressure drops so hard?

WIll try to get my hands on a stroboscope tomorrow in a shop :P

Ordered a timing gun.

With this low oil pressure, wouldn't there be a lot less oil in the rocker cover etc?

As  there was a real puddle of oil there :P

First of all you need to know what the actual temperature is, so fit a capilliary-type gauge instead of the electric one.

You say you have an 8-blade fan. I've not seen one of these. the 6-blade steel fan is the best. make absolutely certain the fan is fitted the correct way round. It is easy to get this wrong and the cooling air flow is then reduced by about 25%.

Use top quality 20w50 mineral oil.

Nope oil still gets everywhere just at a lower pressure.

will be 11 blade I think, standard fan in the 90's?

I had a capilar gauge, but broke it while tightening.Might try to source a new one, but will take a while to ship again ( can't buyt this off the shelf in belgium)

Do you think hot oil could drop the pressure that much?

Could a mechanical oil pressure gauge 'lose' a bit of pressure via a leak ?

cheers
