Hi,

I adjusted my valve clearances on my 1997 MPI recently and I noticed that there was a considerable amount of rotational slip between the rocker and the shaft. I adjusted as best I could but they are rattling again :/.

Originally I wanted to just replace the rocker assembly with a standard assembly (1.3 Ratio) but they seem difficult to find. My only issue with using a 1.5 ratio is knocking on the rocker cover (http://minispares.co...px|Back to shop).

So is it worth going for the high lift and seeing if it collides with the rocker cover? (anyone have any experience of this) or trying to find a 1.3 Rocker assembly.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks

I do not understand what you mean by rotational slip.  If you have set the clearance, the rocker arm will pivot "up and down" by the amount of that clearance and the motion should be quite free.  Are you instead experiencing some other looseness?  Can you elaborate a bit more?

I am guessing you are meaning rocker movement by rotational slip ?

the rocker face may be worn , and the feeler won't be measuring the true gap , it will measure the outer surface , so total gap will be larger

It is quite difficult to explain, should the rocker arm rotate on the shaft whist the shaft is fixed? Because that is what I have at the moment.

yes - it needs to rotate around the shaft for the rocker to work

I found this link to what I mean by wear

sometimes the tappets pit where the end of the valve wears it away and when the feeler gauge is slid in between it can give an incorrect reading as the feeler gauge would sit on the shoulder of the recess. its worth looking at.

he describes rocker wear better than me

Ahhhh so I have been doing the clearances wrong, I feel like an ass. Yeah I felt a ridge whilst doing it and tried to take the this into account.

Sorry for wasting time :/

Just letting you know these are available: http://www.minisport...ckers-blue.html

Mine were worn down (tips of the rockers) so I got them as a replacement.

I've only done the initial 15 minute run in at 2000 rpm but they seem fine.

Hope this helps.

I like the idea of fitting roller tip 1.3's too. Are these minisport parts decent quality? I wanted to fit 1.5's but a few folks have suggested that I shouldn't do that on my standard 1.3 SPi cooper cam. Fitting 1.3 roller seems like a good compromise.
