I have not owned my mini long but I am gradually uprating various bits of the car. I currently have an hs4 on a standard head. I have not touched any of the fuel system as yet and probably has not been touched for years and is overdue a carb strip down/ service due to running problems. Now I don't want to waste money on rebuilding the hs4 as I am looking to build a fast road 998 with different head etc. so I am going to rebuild a hif44(To learn a little about carbs whilst I'm at it) and I want to know what kind of setup I would be looking at. I'm not fussed about which is best for the engine in terms of performance but could do with it being drivable.
Hope this reads ok and any input would be welcomed.
Cheers
Jon

An HIF44 will be too much carb for your 998…even after some work.

You'd be better off  to fit your HS4 or better yet an HIF38 (1.5")…nice smooth throttle.

The best, in my opinion, would be twin HS2 with the proper needles.

+1 for not using the HIF44 on a Stage 1 998.

Would suggest keeping the HS4, use with a good water-heated manifold, well modified head, and RC40 exhaust makes a good combination.

i'm using a HS4 with cone high air flow filter, AAU needle and red carb spring.. and i have ZERO fueling issues.. my car is pretty fast  for a 998 and can keep up with almost all the 1.3s

As everyone above has said, HIFF44 is too much for a 998.

Why not refurb your HS4 and see how that goes, then maybe upgrade to twin HS2 later?

Hi,

It's all about how quick the gas gets in and the gas gets out, this helps with performance, not just about a bigger carb.

As mentioned, your HS4 will be fine, rebuilt using the larger needle and free flow air filter of good quality. Use a good air filter though as you will go backwards as opposed to forwards in regards of gaining extra power.

If you had a smoother inlet and outlet manifold as opposed the standard Mini manifold, this will also help you considerably in gaining extra performance.

From what you are planning, just buy a good quality stage one kit like the minispares one which has been developed on a dyno. Avoid cheap large bore kits as this will lose you power.

Stick with your HS4 carb and service it using an SU rebuild kit. Build the carb carefully and maybe modify it using a few of the David Vizards modifications explained in his book refered to as the "yellow bible"

Then service the engine. Once you have the car ready for the road, take it to a reputable mini friendly rolling road for a session to get everything set up and checked properly. You will see the benefits of the rolling road. Its like night and day.
