Hullo,
Can anybody answer a question for me please. I am rebuilding my Mini Thirty, I too some parts in to be Blasted and Powder Coated. I was in there today and he showed me the Swivel Hubs that had just been Blasted, but, he'd taken out a bearing Carrier out of it. I have just looked at the MiniSpares Bible and I can't see one listed at all. Will it be difficult to find one. I haven't tried yet, but I thought that rather than trudge around Various shops, I would enquire here first.

There is no such thing as a bearing carrier. But there are bearing races which are part of the bearing.

Make sure you get the proper quality bearings, and not cheap ones!

I'm sure its not in the plan but ask your chaps not to powdercoat inside the hub - the bearing race is unsurprisingly an exceptionally tight interference fit...powdercoating there whilst pretty will break up in places dispensing dust straight into your fresh bearing grease......

Thank you all,

As you may guess I am not an Engineer but I am getting on with the rebuild myself. I obviously called the part I am referring to by an incorrect name,, but it's obviously where a Bearing is placed. This chap has knocked this piece out, he is very good at his job and has quite a good little company, always very busy. It was just when he told me he'd taken out this race or carrier, I realised that I should need to buy a replacement. I looked at the MiniSpares parts book and wasn't able to find one, and by the look of the diagrams there doesn't seem to be one. He definately will not Powder Coat the inside surfaces. I'll just have to wait until all my bits are ready, then take it over to Richard at Harrogate, he will know.

The part he knocked out is indeed a bearing race. The bearings come in two parts - you have a solid precision machined tapered inner part, and then you have the outer taper roller bearing (unless it is a ball bearing setup, but same principal just the solid race is a different shape and the outer race is made of balls in a cage rather than rollers). The roller or ball bearings run against the solid part. When people refer to a bearing, they generally mean both inner and outer races together. The Hub has an inner and outer bearing on both sides. By using this design, where the solid surface (inner race) is removable, rather than creating a bearing race as an integral part of the hub, it makes the bearings serviceable without having to replace the hub and simplifies the manufacturing process of the hub.

When you buy wheel bearings they come with the solid part and the roller bearing part matched in a set. You press or carefully knock in the solid part to the hub, then the roller bearing runs on that. When you torque up the CV nut, you are pressing the bearing tightly in against the solid inner race, so that there is no play and the bearings are evenly loaded. The Hub is made so that the solid part is a very tight fit in the hub, otherwise it could spin in the hub. For this reason, as mentioned above, you don't want to get any paint or powder coating in there as it could make installation of the solid inner race difficult or end up spreading paint / coating around the place and getting into your bearings.

This image conveys the idea quite well :

Thank you very much Carlukemini,
your picture shows exactly the outer ( I called it a Carrier ) Race that I was asking about, now I have this I can go and buy a replacement without any further problems.
Kind regards, Archie.

Hey Archie,

Good luck with your project.

Just for a heads up, you won't be able to purchase that (the outer bearing race) on it's own, it is part of a matched wheel bearing assembly. While there are a few brands in these kicking about, most here seem to have had the best success with the genuine ones (or maybe put another way, less with non genuine).

They come as a kit, for example;-

How is the project going Archie? I remember your story about the car, good to see you are still working away at it. As Moke says, the bearings come as matched sets so you really need to buy a hub bearing set as Moke linked to, and renew both inner and outer races on each side of the hub.

Good luck and don't hesitate to ask for advice or opinions if needed. :-)

Hullo SpiGuy,
Thank you for your help. The project is now moving onward although very slowly. The Body Shell is now back home with me, they've made a really fine job of it too. There's not one panel that they have left untouched, it is now like a brand ne Shell but at a fraction of the cost. Since its been back I have put on the rear Sub Frame, the Radius Arms, the new Hi-Lo's, and Shockers. The Fuel and Brake Pipes are on, the Brakes are on complete. I am just waiting for the rear Hubs to come back. I can't he put these on plus the Wheels with Falken 165/12 R70's on. Put in the Tank couple that to the Pipe, then the back end is done. My thoughts then are to let it down off of the Axle Stand onto the Wheels, move the Axle Stands to the front. Then whilst there is still room to move, put in the Hand Brake and get all of the wiring sorted out with all the Lights working. I am also getting the Front Sub Fram built up, so that I can put that on as I work my way forward. The Engine is still in the very capable hands of Keith Calver, it's been ready for over a year now, stood in his Workshop. But hopefully soon it will be where it should be.. here are a couple of photos taken as I collected it from the Body Shop.

Archie, that looks gorgeous. A proper deep glossy red, looks like they have got the colour just right. The car will be a credit to you when it is done :-)

Thank you very much Spiguy,

, I certainly hope so. With a little bit of Luck I can have it on its rear Wheels during this next week, and start on the Front end, whilst an Electrician can sort out where all the wires go.
