A Mate had this problem with his MGB. Check out this form the direct gov website:

https://www.gov.uk/s...have-seat-belts

Also check that the car definitely did not have seatbelts when manufactured.

But having said that I would think not fitting them is asking for trouble, obviously seatbelts vastly improve safety... I know I would not be on the road without seatbelts. Plus even if its legal you’ll still get pulled over every 5 min as I doubt many coppers can tell the difference between a 1964 and a 1984 mini.

I can’t think of an instance where you would regret fitting seatbelts….

I'm in agreement with BTM2, you'd be a bit crazy to drive a car without them. Bit different if it was a 1902 locomobile, maybe better with out them but any 'modern' car needs them. Old cars might not have fancy air bags and crumple zones but I'd rather be in the car than flying around outside it.

No. As the car was first used before 1st January 1965.

+1 on having belts even if not needed, but then again I have been in an older car that rolled at 40/50mph and I am sure I wouldnt be here today if I didnt have a belt on.  Just for info, it wasnt my fault - deisel spill on a corner that hadnt been marked (even the police patrol vehicle that came ended up with someone embedded in their car!!)

Yes thanks.
I fully intent to fit seat belts it would be stupid not to I know, but I want to take the car for an MOT and was wondering if I need them to pass. Sounds like I don't
