Hi I have a 998 engine with no head that came with my mini from the scrappy. I've been given a 12g940 head from a 1300 MG will this fit or will I need to do any modifications. Also will it improve the engines performance?

This must get asked on a weekly basis. Anyway, in short, yes you can fit it. You'll need to use the 1275 head gasket and most crucially you need to check the clearance between the exhaust valve and the block face at full lift. You can either cut recesses/pockets into the block face or sink the valves into the head by cutting the valve seats deeper. How much you need to remove will depend on how much lift you're using.
Careful measurement is needed to determine what's required.

You will most likely lose a little performance low down due to the larger port, but mid range and top end should be improved. Coupled with a decent cam, exhaust system and inlet will make a big improvement over stock.

Phil.
