Hullo,
I'm just getting along nicely refitting all the bits and pieces back on the newly refurbished Body of my Mini Thirty. I got it back from the Body Shop just over a week ago, and I'm fairly pleased with how the jobs going along. I thought that I'd start at the back end and move forwards, the rear Sub Frame is on, the Radius Arms are on, my new Hi-Lo's are in place, the rear brakes are on, all the Brake Pipes and Hoses plus the Fuel Pipe are complete and I'm just waiting for the Hubs to come back from the Powder Coaters. The brake Drums, Wheels with Tyres and Wheel Nuts are standing by, then the back end is done.
While I at it I thought I'd put the fuel tank back in, no problems, a 10 minute job I thought. Oh dear, it's a bloody nightmare, a job so easy. I've put it in the breather pipe through the floor, the fuel pipe through the floor just in front of it, the Wires connected to the Sender Unit and the Filler Nozzle with the packing ring and Rubber Grommet is through the hole with the Fuel Cap on. Great, er! No, not really. At the back there is on the Tank edge the sort of lip that's Spot Welded, with a hole in it. There is also a mounting point on the floor with a Captive Nut on it. I've put a bolt through these two holes, obviously where it should be, tightened it all up, Job done. No it's not! Sodding thing. The lip is too far back and the Bloody Boot Lid won't shut.
I haven't fitted the Tank Strap yet. But even if I do it won't make a difference as if it eases it forward, the Bolt won't line up at the back.
HAS ANYBODY ELSE HAD THIS HAPPEN. PLEASE GIVE ME A CLUE.

Mine might be fitted wrong, but the bolt on it doesn't go through the hole on the edge of the fuel tank.

I had to move my tank, and I assumed that last time it was out someone hadn't refitted it right, so I thought that hole must line up with where the bolt goes. However like you I couldn't get it to fit right, so I just put it back as I found it, with the bolt going through just the strap, and the floor bracket.

To me it looked impossible to get the bolt to go through the hole on the fuel tank.

I've just had this taking my tank out to waxoyl the ns arch and inspect the fuel sender, I was trying the same thing! That hole looks just right but it isn't, it ends up just behind the mounting plate.

There is a similar hole at the top which clearly cannot fit to anything, so maybe they are just something that were used during the manufacture of the tank?

Yes the hole is where the tank sits on the jig for roller welding the seam.  The strap goes around the tank, no fixings pass through it at all.

Hullo all,
Thank you to you all for your help. It just shows what a novice I am doesn't it. Tomorrow I shall get out and relocate the Tank. Taking care to put the strap on correctly. I am most grateful.
Archie.

Had mini tanks out many times over the years, and it still always confuses me... I know you don't use the hole, but I still look at and think " is that bolt supposed to go through the hole?" So don't feel bad about it, you are not alone. Minis eh?
