Is the crankshaft oil seal fitting tool needed or can you DIY one? got the engine out and in bits to replace it but didnt know if it was worth spending £25 or so on a tool I will probably only use once or if a simialr tool can be made from old tubes.

Also when exposing the old oil seal it has silcon sealant smeared around it... Im guessing someone tried to botch the leak up at some point or are you suposed to put some sealant on as well?

Thanks

Sounds like the tried to stop a leak. The tools are good in terms of ensuring the seal is installed square ame the splines don't damage it when it's being installed. But you can install them without the tool

As I'm a cheapskate I didn't buy a tool - but then went through 2 uprated seals trying to "Tap them in" square :-|

I got the seal over the splines using masking tape and plenty of lube but struggled to get the outer edges in without damaging the rubber covering the steel part.

Ended up making a tool to get it in properly:

I'm sure you can make one out of steel tubing etc... Just make sure you don't damage the seal with any sharp edges.

A mate of mine made a tool similar to Smackfiend's out of some PVC Plumbing Pipe fittings. Easy, Cheap and has done the job for him a few times now.

hi all,

I am about to do my driveshaft oil seals.  apart from a scissor type ball joint splitter, what other tools would I need?

Is there a proper tool you can buy to fit the new seal?

I see you made one, which I can try, but what are the dimensions of the tool?

thanks!
