Hi there!

I need to replace my engine tag as its all tattered and torn after all these years ( and tools dropping on it after my rebuild lol). Is it possible to get the existing rivets out without drilling holes? And how would I install new ones? As these don't look like standard rivets to me?

Thanks

If it's got the ones I'm familiar with then they're actually a hardened knock in type. I have had limited success using pincers ground sharp at the jaws. They tend to rust in pretty solid. If you decide to try and drill them out, try a cobalt drill.

They have a spiral down their shaft so you just knock them in. Some people say you can cut slots in the heads of the old ones and unscrew but I have never had any luck with this. Give it a go but you will prob end up grinding flat and drilling out. New screws are available for about a pound each. Minimania.com has them in stock. Put rivet in their search box.

I usually go at them with a small chisel, with a bit of patience you can get them out intact and reuse.

You can tap them out with a small chisel, effectively they unscrew anti-clockwise.
Alternatively
Chisel head off flush with block. Drill new holes to one side of the old ones to fit new plate. New plate will cover old holes.
They are called scrivets. Screw rivets.
Minimail can supply new engine number plate correctly stamped with your number and the fixings.

In the U.S. they are called "drivescrews".  I ordered mine from an industrial supplier over here, McMaster-Carr

When I need to take these out I use a thin cut off wheel in a Dremel tool to make a slot in the rivet head.  Then I use a screwdriver to back them out.

As mentioned above, they have a spiral shank so putting new ones in involves only a few well aimed, gentle hammer blows.

I used a dremel with a cutting/grinding disc to put a flat edge to opposing sides of the scrivet, then gripped with long handled pinchers and unscrewed. One unscrewed the other just snapped the head off just short of surface. I guess for security reason,s there not supposed to come out easy. P.s does anyone know where they reverse stamp a new plate as mines now looking poorly?.

From memory I think it was 4mm drill. It's obvious when you get the new scrivets

Just drilled out the remnents of the two scrivets after a block skim with a 5/32" drill ready for fitting new engine number plate.

Not significantly different.  0.156" for 5/32" vs 0.157" for 4mm.
