Came to the conclusion that the gear box might need a look at, the problem is that when you go from 3rd to 2nd (when the speed is above about 18/20mph) it makes a sorta grating sound? But it makes no grating noise when at a slower speeds..

Wondering if its better to get the gear box reconditioned by a professional company or to buy another one and have someone fit that into the car? Or would I be better off just driving slower then changing into second making no grating sound at all?

Secondly my cars engine is from 1993 BUT the actual mini it is in is a 1973, so it has no CAT, what engine oil is recommended? I've been told 20w50, 10w40 or 10w50...just wondering which is best?

Thank you for reading!

The crunch is due to the baulkring wearing out, this is just a fact of life, and will need sorting sooner or later...

You can get around it by double-de-cluching but everytime you miss, every crunch is a little more off the dog teeth of the second gear, which eventually will also need replacing, additional costs....

As for what oil... may the debate commence, however, IMO I really does not matter too much what oil you use as long as you change it regularly, but I would suggest a mineral 10w40,15w40 or 20w50.

20W50 Valvoline or Millers oil. Millers produce a specialist oil for mini engines. :D  :highfive:

Is the baulking something that can be repaired on its own without having to re-do the whole gear box? How much would it cost?

No, whole gearbox apart to change baulkrings ( there's 4 altogether in your gearbox - one for each gear )

Costs start @ £129

Are there any places near Sussex/London that would do that sort of work?

No point in penny pinching to be honest. You either want it done cheap or right. :shy: The baulk rings are made to wear anyhoo, so the sooner you get the problem sorted the better.

As for oil Halford's recommend 20w50 but GC Motors in Kent (all they do is classic mini sales) use 10w50..much of a difference between them two?

Thanks for pointing him out,

Does anyone have any idea how much it'd be to get the baulk ring repaired?
