I was just wondering, what type of sealant for lightly smearing on gaskets and what type of thread lock should be used during rebuild? thanks

Depends which gaskets and bolts/studs you are considering. Many ... nothing.

I use Loctite No. 3 Gasket Goo for most gaskets, though I use an RTV Silicon of the water pump and thermostat housing. It's also the same one I use if the Diff Housing on the Gearbox is a Gasket-less type.

For thread locking, there's not many that I use this stuff on, only the Camshaft Nut, Harmonic Damper Bolt and Flywheel Bolt. I don't know the number off the top of my head, but it's the Loctite Medium Grade. I also use the same one for sealing the Freeze Plugs and if the engine has removable Oil Way Plugs.

Loctite Blue is probably the medium stuff. Red sets pretty hard and Purple for small bolts.
