Yop,

it's great to have had so much help and advice from the forum - have been too busy recently to finish testing out my car - but it seems to be back in order now

I am toying with the idea of putting on a tuned head

I would like to the keep the original head

but was thinking I could pick up a head and tune it myself

and I have never done this to a car - I have ported motor cycle engines, put on high rpm fly wheels, ei and so on but never on a car

my car is a jap mpi / spi what sort of thing should I look at and what kind of budget should I look at and what kind of difference would it make

in my mind I see things like an aluminium head block 4 valves (?) or bigger valves, high lift long duration cam, roller rockers

to be honest I haven't a clue but I think I have the tools and ability to do it - I don't want to buy one I want to do as much as I can by myself as  a project if you have any suggestions and ideas I'm all ears

I would recommend getting your hands on a copy of David Vizards "tuning the a series" book. It details all the modifications you can do to the engine and how much benefit there is in each option. The mini head is very lacking in performance so lots can be done to it however it would be just as easy to make it worse than better if you haven't got experience of porting that particular design.

Lots of benefits can be achieved by going for better flowing heads such as alloy 7 ports, 8 ports, 16v heads etc but costs come up considerably. Get a copy of the book and have a read then make a plan on what you want to achieve and see which option suits you. :)
