I do believe that Sprocket gave out this info on testing the lambda with a mV (milivolt) reading dmm

 

I have a very old ex military fluke 77 it has one setting 300mV -

 

would that be good to do the lambda test

 

also I'm not sure that I get which fuel line is green and which one is orange for the pinch test - a pic would be super helpful

I think you can see the fuel line colours here:

However, you need to read up to 1 volt, 300mV is not enough. (0.2volts rich, 0.8 volts lean)

As above, not enough range on the 300mV range. However the setting next to it for DC volts will probably be fine. It has a large range, but it should be able to read well enough . Should be accurate enough to give you an idea of what is happening.

 

The only issue using a multimeter is that you will only see the voltage swinging as fast as the meter can update it's reading. So you can only take this reading as an indication of what is happening - you can't conclude that it is not cycling at the correct speed for example, as it could be that you are only seeing every 2nd or 3rd voltage swing for example. Also, you may end up not seeing the full extent of each swing - maybe one swing the meter will update at 0.4V on the way down and 0.6V on the way up, next time it could be 0.2V and 0.8V etc.

 

Where it will be most useful will be to see if you have a stuck high or low issue. After that if it appears to be changing at least once or twice a second and it is going roughly between 0 and 1V then you could take that as an indication that it is probably OK.

Regarding the pinch test, on some cars the green and orange marking tape might be missing. You can also look on the throttle body where the 2 metal hoses are fixed to the body, there is a small arrow on each showing the fuel pressure line (pointing to the TBI)  and return line (going away from the TBI). Orange is the pressure line and green is the return line.

cheers guys - getting to know my mini these days

ok so the flexi pipe is up on the right just above the throttle body

one line going in one line coming out

 

I have had the busiest 3 weeks with my mini ever after 4 years of peace and quiet it just decided to try and get a whole lot

of attention

what a laugh getting the fuel filter off, then the water temp sensor and a face full of coolant (I let it drain in a bucket actually)

I'm pretty certain now it's the lambda (hoping to get a code reader or at least the use of one soon)

 

really enjoying this but it's so frustrating when it's the first time through - forum has been a life saver :)
