Hi, I have a 1994 1275 and recently I've noticed a humming noise coming from the engine when sat inside the car. This happens on tick over/ sat in traffic with the car in neutral. I get this noise then when I lift the clutch up and driving I can't hear it, seems to disappear. It doesn't do it all the time just now and then.

Hope you can shed some light on what I could be. Thanks

Sounds like it could be a noisy clutch release bearing

Need more info really. Where does it seem to come from?  Humming is a hard one to imagine, is it high or low frequency?  Sure it isn't just something vibrating?

It's like a low frequency humming but only happens now and then that what baffles me so much, I checked to see if anything was loose and vibrating but at the time it wasn't making the humming noise, seems to be coming from the fan side of the engine

Thanks

Could it be pressure building in the radiator?

If its the fan side of the engine, could well be the water pump is showing signs its on the way out.

I changed the water pump and radiator about 6 months back.

Don't disregard failure of new components. Agreed its less likely, but there seems to be a lot of cheaply made components around. We have had several failures in newly fitted items (cylinder head gasket, amongst others) and been very confused until testing the new part - to find its failed already.

Suggest removing fan belt to isolate water pump and alternator. Does noise appear regardless of engine temperature? Agree with Nick, if noise disappears when you depress clutch, best guess is clutch release bearing

Yeah I suppose it could be a faulty new part, the noise is when the temperature is just below the halfway mark and the noise goes away when you engage the clutch, sat in neutral is when I can hear the noise.    thanks for all your help really appreciate it
