Ive had front and rear subframes given me by an uncle oof mine for my mk 1 restoration project, problem being that the front one although in very good condition is a single bolt type, so my question is could i just add some threaed inserts to accommodate the smaller bolts either side or are there any other differences i need to know about ?

Yes there are other differences such as the other mounts. Abc then they year of the single bolt frame as later ones had the engine further forward and the the latest had the rad months on it......
Turning it into s twin bolt is not quite as simple as you imply.. I would sell it on and get a correct one.

The biggest difference other than the twin tower bolts is the rear legs. These are 2 inches longer to wrap under the toeboard. So to answer your question no is the answer you need to buy the correct subframe.
