Rustproffing Behind Shock Brackets

HI all,

 

As I march onwards with my near obsession level rustproofing, I want to get rustproofing wax into the front crossmember so that it goes behind the area of inner wing where the shock bracket attaches. What is the best way to get access to in behind this area? If I squirt in via the tower bolts (mine is a single bolt car) will this get in there? or is there a better way to get in there?

Below the lower dash rail either side is a opening for mounting the pedal box etc. Pump it in through there.

Not really spiguy. The cavity of the bulkhead crossmember is surrounded by steel plate to reinforce the sections around the bulkhead bolts, so you wont get access that way. You can go through openings on each side from the inside of the bulkhead (inside the car) but youd need to remove carpet & stuff first. Theres probarbly access from the engine bay side somewhere.

Id actually recommend unbolting the shock mount on both sides to check the condition of the steel of the wing and reinforcing plate behind. The corrosion can take place between the plates, not always beginning from the inside face of the inner wing.

There is no other access other than the mounting points either side for the master cylinder / water pipes externally.

What about drilling a little hole near each end which can then be plugged with a grommet?

I put a large blob of thick grease between the damper bracket & the inner wing , as well as the bolt holes / threads

 

I have no idea if it will do anything , just makes me feel better

 

the rust is fierce in that area with all the sandwiched plates drawing moisture ,

 

I wonder if a small hole above the affected area (engine bay side) to pump grease / oil in , then seal with a small bolt ?

Paint the damper bracket off the car and make sure the area behind it is painted too

Always 'wet assemble' using a waterproof jointing compound. Bath sealer is as good as anything. Just apply it to the mating faces, tighten up the bolts and wipe off the excess.

This applies not only to the damper brackets, but to all other surfaces which are bolted together. It's what is done on aircraft to prevent deep corrosion.

When you say bath sealer, do you mean the silicone variety?
