Is it normal for headgaskets to arrive with slight bends / dents / creases in? Do they flatten down ones fitted?

Also whats best to clean the block surface with before fitting? (Planning on having the head skimmed)

Thanks

No, they should come flat and straight, fitting one with a bend or a kink may well be ok but at the risk of having to redo the job in 1000 miles time i wouldnt bother.

Use a gasket scraper to clean the face of the block. Just ensure the bores are fully cleaned out before continuing

Galleys are not designed with bends, dents or creases in them so they shouldn't arrive to you like that. Especially so a head gasket: demand a replacement.

another delay then on the rebuild.... :-( Why dont companies send out gaskets on flat card to help stop bends??? Big order of gaskets and not one of them was on card to keep it flat and straight!!

Most gasket sets are shrink wrapped onto thick cardboard to prevent damage, I would be wondering the level of quality of the headgasket if its not packaged well, getting a decent one would be wise as its not a job you want to do too many times in a row.

To avoid doing the job twice get a Payen gasket.

I'd second that, always had gaskets arrived with cardboard to stop them bending. Long shot but where are you and what engine as I have a spare that you could have if it helps you get on? I know how frustrating it is waiting for parts.
