Hi all,

mini failed its mot (no surprise) on silly little things, however the mot tester said the rear cones/trumpets should have springs on? as such they fall around when jacked up as there are none fitted. Does this sound right?

Afraid I don't know much about the suspension side of things yet, I do know they are adjustable that are fitted, other than that I have no clue.

Since the mot the car now sits real low at the rear (wheels rub the arches over small bumps.) car is a 93 cooper.

Cheers in advance

Jay.

Replaced my rear set-up for hi-lo's a few months back, cant recall seeing any springs?

Maybe they just need adjusting again to lift the rear up a bit,

sounds like they have been sádjusted so low that the cones are coming lose with the wheel drop. you either need to adjust back up or fit shortened shocks so the wheels can not drop as far causing the rubber dounuts to come lose.

Thanks guys, much appreciated, guessed as much as minispares showed no rear springs. Will get the spanners out tomorrow.

Take care.

You say since the mot it rubs on the rear arches? The mot man has done something to contribute to this??
Other than that, with him jacking the wheels off the floor as they do to check play he may have disturbed the nylon bushes in the radius arm connection to the cone? I've never seen springs on rear suspension on classic minis (road ones anyway) it leads me to think he does not know what he's talking about as a lot of these 'new' plug the computer in mechanics don't with old classic cars!
I remember laughing when I took my MG midget for mot and I heard one of the lads shout hurry up the dynamo won't charge the battery as they were testing the lights etc and you could hear the electric fan kicking in to cool the motor, bonnet is up by the way, I was asked what I was laughing at and said well if you look it has a 56 amp alternator on it which is clearly visible and looks nothing like a dynamo lol, needless to say I don't use that garage anymore ;-)

These are the springs on a Mini, if you were missing these you'd know about it.

These are item 1 in the link below.  The adjustable bit will be an aftermarket version of item 2.

As suggested if you're car has been adjusted to sit low there is every possibility that it all comes loose when the car is jacked up off it's wheels.

It is worrying that a supposed professional mechanic can spout such drivel.

No "springs" on standard rubber suspension. The whole lot is prevented from comong loose by hanging on the shock at the rear, so as mentioned by Nicklouse, either adjust the suspension higher (there are recent threads on standard settings) or fit lowered shocks.
