    Starting My Mini Up

Hi, my grandad recently gave me a 1979 Mini Clubman 1100 for my birthday, and I have been trying to get an insurance quote for it.

The thing is, I cant seem to find Clubman under Mini, and as the car hasn't been registered on the road for over 10 years, I can't enter the registration number to find it.

Any pointers?

phone up the insurers. Its usually far cheaper like that that going online or through a comparison site when it comes to insuring classic cars.

I recently got a quote via Go Compare and Admiral were the cheapest and the comparison site pulled up the details on our '87 mini

Are you looking under the right manufacturer? "Mini" tends to refer to the BMW one on most sites. You may see Austin, Morris, Leyland, BMC or Rover in the list and one of them might do the trick.

Like DF said, Mini refers to the BMW version. You should look under Austin for your clubman.

If in doubt use a site where you can put the reg in or check out the details of your car with the DVLA link below.

What is the vehicle make on the V5C? Start by putting that into the insurance site, then the correct models should come up.

As others have said, always phone insurance companies and never accept the first two quotes they give you.
When they give you your quote tell them that it's too much. They will then say "hold the line sir, I'll just speak to my manager"
In reality they will just put you on hold whilst staring at a screen that already has much cheaper quotes on.
If you do this two or three times you will save a minimum of £50 for the year.
Saved me £70 on my van insurance and £50 on the mini this year.
Also makes what could be quite a tedious phone call into quite a fun game.

You are trying to insure an old classic car, not a modern car. Most classic cars are not on the main insurers data-bases. You would be unlikely to find the Ford Anglia, the Triumph 2000, the Hillman Imp, etc., so don't expect to find a Mini from the same era. That is where the insurers of classic cars come in and how they stay in business. Try Adrian Flux or one of the other classic car insurance specialists.

For a classic car then ideally you need an agreed valuation policy from a specialist insurer, not just a standard motor insurance policy from a high street provider. Otherwise in the event of a claim, you'll risk getting back just the standard market value for an old car (I.e a few hundred quid). So steer clear from mainstream insurers and comparison websites and try the likes of HIC, Peter James, RH classic, & Adrian Flux etc. instead.

if i was you, go for a classic car specialist insurance anyway.

i was gonna go with aviva but they said its no point because even if my mini say be worth a couple grand, they only pay book value, which is like £50.

I'm with HIC, fully recommend them.
