I've been getting some knocking from the passenger footwell when acceleration recently.

Jacked the car up today to try to find out what it is, and it looks like one of the nuts securing the lower front subframe to the floor pan is missing. The bolt is thankfully still there, but does anyone know what size it is? I've got nuts that are too big, and nuts that are too small, but nothing just right.....

Thanks

Hi. I'm assuming you mean the nut that holds the rear rubber mount to the floor as the subframe does not bolt direct for the floor for that year of car. If so it's an M8 nut (also assuming the plate with 2 bolts inside the car as not been replaced with separate bolts at some point).

Thanks, I've managed to get it now - looks like the bolt's been replaced. Ended up going through every nut in my tool box, and finally got one to work.

Just off for a drive now to listen for any knocking.

If it's original it'll 5/16" UNF, certainly not M8.

Both Somerford and Minispares list this part as an M8 nut, Somerford from 1982 onwards. Don know exactly when changeover was by certainly by 95 it was metric.

I thought that too, so I looked up the part. Looks like the metal stud 'strap' with the captive bolts uses M8, and the other two nuts and bolts that attach the subby to the mount are 5/16?!  Weird isn't it, actually it's a bit dangerous I suspect. Would be easy to mix nuts up when working on those mounts. Dunno if 5/16 would go on to the M8 thread or vice-versa, but I imagine you could brute force it !

I take it this must have been changed at some point, old timer minis surely wouldn't have had M8 fixings there or anywhere else?
