A Mini seat belts question – I have had a search but I didn't find any definitive answers...

Has anyone replaced the pre tensioner seat belts in a ’96-2000 Mini, and if so what with? I know the belts linked to the airbag system electrically which is a bit of a PITA.

I’ve checked all the usual places and the belts are NLA. I can’t believe these weren't used in another Rover product or Land Rover, given that the airbag is from the MGF.

Mini Spares say they can be replaced by their belts which are the Securon 500/30, but Somerford Mini state the Securon aren’t suitable due to the airbag but offer no alternative, so it's a bit confusing. :-(

The Rover part numbers from Somerford Mini are:
EVB104460PMA FRONT SEAT BELT, RH, Black 1 1999 on.
EVB104470PMA FRONT SEAT BELT, LH, Black 1 1997 on.

2nd hand ones are a non-starter before anyone suggests it - we've had at least 2 sets of new belts on the car already from new and they are rubbish quality and keep fraying.

Anyone got any suggestions? If we replace the belts with normal ones I guess we'll have to replace the steering wheel as well or completely deactivate the SRS system. What are the MoT implication doing this?

Thanks.

Well I had the similar problem trying to find them and then getting second hand ones which in the end did not work. I decided to get the ones from mini spares and put them in the car but I took the tensioners off the seat belts and secured it to the car as to keep the circuit to the airbags.

Can you explain what you did here?  I looked at but wasn't overly confident.

Do apologise for the late reply. So what I did was take the old seat belts out, the tensioner connects to the reel so what I did was take apart the reel to take the tensioner out. So basically the black cylinder is still in my car which completes the circuit. I could of used a relay but I was lazy and didn't feel like it at the time....

Did anyone ever get any further with finding viable options? My passenger side front belt isn't returning properly and then locks after every pull taking an age to get the bloody belt out. Any advice on what people have done would be great before I decide what to do.

I would think you could have new webbing fitted.

Surely the issue is the pretensioner is required to ensure you're out of the firing line of the airbag while it deploys. No idea if there's any sensors or programmed activation involved.

Alternative belts may fit, but they're probably intended for use along with the airbag being removed.
