Took the Mini out today, and when I got back home I noticed the engine was making a very noticeable rattle noise.

Its difficult to pinpoint what part of the engine it is coming from.

Engine seems to be running fine, and oil pressure is good (50 psi at hot idle). Makes no difference if I have my foot on the clutch or not.

Goes away when I rev it up (or it just doesn't get any louder and the engine drowns it out)

Anyone recognise the noise in the video? It sounds much more noticeable in the video than it does in person.

No not done anything.

Left work and it was fine, by the time I got home it had started making that noise.

its not internal, maybe its the engines natural hatred of silly hoses.

Has the crank pulley come loose and chattering on the key?

Sounds like fan scraping, or possibly exhaust leak?

Had a good look this morning, fan and crank pully are fine, and doesn't seem to be coming from the exhaust.

I had a go at using the long screwdriver trick to locate the noise, and it's definitely coming from under the rocker cover.

So is it likely to be a noisy tappet?

Just had a go out the tappets tonight. Half of them seemed to tight to get the feeler in. Loosened them up slightly, and I'll double check my work tomorrow before starting her up.

Haynes manual is useless! Being an amateur it took me 10 mins to realise that when it said open valve it meant compressed one! The guide on here is much better and written in layman's language.
