Strange one this, I've removed the water pump and radiator to replace the bypass hose. Decided to clean and degrease the block and head while everything was out the way and I found what looks like a pop rivet fitted in the head behind the bypass hose. :ohno:

As there's a hole there, does anyone know what should be there (if anything) as clearly a rivet should not. Guessing drilling it out would be the best way to remove it?

So if you remove it what you going to put in there instead?

Iirc it is a closed rivit closing of an oil drilling.

But not 100% on that.

It's an Oilway drilling in the head.

That's what they fitted in later years in the factory to plug them. Prior to this, they were Brass Plugs.

Perfectly normal (as long as it's not leaking!).

Top tip if you find something on your Mini and it is not causing an issue don't touch it.

That's great thanks. Didn't realise that and can't say I've noticed them before, thought it was a bodge someone had done. One less thing to worry about.

Don't think it's leaking, degreased it all now and there wasn't a lot of oil in that area so think it is fine.

as above - cross drilling blanking rivet

some are on the lower side of the head , some are higher up

they do leak some times , giving the impression the head gasket is on the way out

Perfectly normal not to leak oil? This is a mini engine after all!

OK, my bad.

Perfectly normal in a late cylinder head to have a plug that looks like a Pop Rivet.

Treat it like the wife (ignore it leaking or not).
