Oil Pressure

Tomorrow I'm setting the static timing on my new 1380 I've just put in then I can get it going. But I've heard I must check the oil pressure. How do I do this as I have no oil pressure gauge?

An Oil Light will do fine.

 

Remover all the spark plugs and turn the engine over on the starter until you get Oil Pressure.

 

You may find it helpful to remove the Banjo Bolt, on the Oil Feed to the Oil Filter, just up and to the left of the Dissy, fill the drilling in the block with engine oil (Oil can is helpful here) and replace the Banjo bolt, being sure the 2 copper washers (one each side of the banjo) are still in place. This will prime the oil pump.

 

It usually only takes around 30 seconds after priming to get Oil Pressure up, but it can take several minutes of cranking, so be patient. Do not start it until you are 100% sure you have Oil Pressure.

It'd be well worth fitting a gauge, comparing the cost to what you've likely already spent.

 

There are also differently rated oil switches, the original is better at telling you your engine is already knackered 

than warning: the pressure might be in single figure before it lights. It'll still do as Spider suggests for a new engine

I've read that by filling through the block and turning the engine backwards you can fill the oil pump ... not sure if anyone has tried that or would agree this is a good way ??

to effectively prime the oil pump you will need to remove the banjo at the block as described above with the plugs out and engine not running put the car into second gear and push the car backwards or jack the car up and turn the front wheels backwards this will draw the oil into the oil pump as you pour fresh oil into the hole. Once you have sufficient oil in the pump re-connect the banjo and spin the engine over with the starter, after 20-30 seconds you should have oil pressure and the oil pressure light should go out.

I always take time to fill the oil filter with clean oil as well before fitting it. This takes a few minutes as the oil soaks down into the element. By doing this as well as priming the pump as described above the time to get oil pressure is minimised whilst cranking. It's a few years since I've done this myself but I recall that the time to pressure is very quick.

A new oil filter MUST always be filled with fresh oil when being fitted.
