still a noobie to minis so pardon the question. Do the steering racks have oil in them? I have just refit mine and moving the hubs does drive the column but it is very clunky as if there needs to be oil or grease in them?

Any help is much appreciated as I want to order any parts ready for the weekend so I can carry on with the build. I aim to have it on its wheels with all the underside finished this weekend.

The rack needs oil which can be a gear oil (EP 70, 80 or 90) or a 20w50 engine oil. The volume needed is stated in the workshop manual, but I don't have one to hand. Put the oil in by jacking the rh side up quite high and pulling back the top edge of the rack gaiter on its inner end and use an oil can.

You can add it via the port that you use to lock the rack in central position.

Oil - 90 weight as a minimum. Safe stuff that's used in conventional gearboxes and diffs.

Agree with this, I did this to stick some oil in my new rack and it worked a treat. Just put it in bit at a time using a syringe, it actually flowed in quite well! If you raise the car on the passenger side it will help too.

Cheers for the comments guys, my mini is in this position at the moment so I'll wait until I'm at the tipping point to put it in.

Not long now, only a couple more bits to do and the underside is as good as new. Then I can get onto the interior. Any reason I can't put the oil in when it is upside down?

Moke, you're right. He really ought to get one. He'll only worry about every noise and rattle he hears without it! (pridge ignore us, ongoing joke  )

It's going to have more dynomat in it than they produce in a month!!

And a radio lol I heard they make lots of unnerving noises when your driving so I think I'll leave the knocking noises until something falls off. As its a nut and bolt restoration I know everything is good.

Oh and a very productive day....

Is that braided fuel pipe running down the length of the underside? Is that legal or even a good idea? Even though it has the s/s outer cover surely it is still more susceptible to damage and leaking than kunifer?

It had a steel pipe on it before so thought a stainless steel covered rubber pipe would be ok. I best check, thanks for pointing it out though.

Just called the garage where I'll be getting the MOT done and they said as long as it is not leaking, is fuel grade line and secured at the standard minimum intervals I can use what I like.
