Hello all after my friend got his mini we have been trying to get the oil pressure light out last week this was achieved by taking out the pressure release valve and putting new oil in the engine but now that we have gone back to the mini tonight the light is back on we have taken the pressure release valve out again to check and all seems okay and it seems we are getting pressure at the filter but the light remains on are there any suggestions to try get the light out ?

Have you fitted an oil pressure gauge teed into the pressure switch hole? That would be my first port of call so you know if you are actually getting pressure or if its just a faulty switch. If you're not getting adequate pressure then its time to investigate further as to why.

I'd suggest fitting a gauge, even if temporarily just to see what's going on.

If tat checks out, fit a new switch.

Seeing flow at the filter is not an indication that the system is actually developing pressure.

Fit a pressure gauge. You can buy one for not a lot of money and for certainly less than a crank re-grind will cost if the pressure really is very low.

Don't run it until a pressure gauge is fitted.

I would certainly do that first, connect the car up to a slave battery, plugs out and turn her over for 30 secs at a time to build up oil pressure on the starter ( dont run the starter for too long as you dont want its magical smoke being let out ;D  ). That should, on a healthy engine show some oil pressure, in the region of 10-20 psi ish. If it doesn't after a couple of 30 second sessions then I would be wanting to possibly investigate further and strip the engine off the box and inspect the main bearings and oil pump.

Bought myself a gauge for my mini but before fitting will try it on my friends car just so we have an idea if we are getting pressure and just have some faulty wiring or a knackered sensor

What would be a healthy pressure to be getting ? I'm getting 60 in mine so am satisfied but how low would be considered good

It depends on the oil temperature and the revs.

When the engine is hot, if you get 65 to 70 psi at over 5000 rpm, with 50 to 55 at 4000 rpm and 25+ at tickover of 800 to 1000 rpm, your engine is fine.

The accepted normal is 20psi min at idle Hot and 10psi per 1000rpm onward until the pressure relief valve opens at around 60psi
