It could be the hinges or the panel the bolt to is rotten causing the door to drop.
Get someone to wiggle the door up and down while open and see if there any play in the hinges or the panel behind them.

Have you ever greased the hinges? Has anyone else? Try it.
Does the latch line up with the strike plate properly? It's adjustable.

To adjust it you use a pretty large cross head screwdriver and then adjust up or down.

There's a large pozidrive screw above and one below the striker plate loop on the door pillar. Slacken them off and it will slide about, don't remove them completely or the striker will drop inside the pillar and you won't get it back out again. Tie some string round the hoop before you start in case it falls.
The striker should line up vertically with where the door latch naturally falls when the door closes, it shouldn't be used to hold the door up or down. That's what hinge shims are for. It is used to hold the door in or out of the body to get it lined up though. With this in the right place (and assuming the door, frame and hinges are in good condition as others have said to check) the door should close easily.

I've got the same on my 1989 mini. Sure the panel is slightly rotten where the hinge bolts onto. The passenger door is ok though.
